There is still time to shop for unique, handmade gifts from the area’s top artists and gift makers. Currently, 26 of Boston’s local artist vendors are open seven days a week on City Hall Plaza, as a part of the Boston Winter event this season. Boston Handmade Local is a group of creative small businesses from the Boston area, who usually can be found selling their creations at Boston’s most popular seasonal arts markets, including SoWa Open Market, and the Greenway Open Market. At the Boston Winter event, members of the group developed their own marketing to identify their pop-up stores with “Boston Handmade Local” signs and they give out hand drawn maps to guide customers to the locations of other local vendors. Shoppers can browse their festively decorated “chalets" and shop for artisan gifts including apparel, jewelry, and accessories; original artwork; home decor and candles; paper goods and stocking stuffers that are all handcrafted right here in New England.
Rusty Kinnunen, of Rusty and Ingrid Creative Company, a fine art screen printing business based in Rockport, MA, who is participating as a vendor at Boston Winter for the second year, says, “The same amazing local artists that sell at at the trendy Holiday Markets in the South End, where customers line up for blocks to shop, are here at Boston Winter on City Hall Plaza, and they are open every day of the week. It’s a great place to find fun and personal gifts that you can’t find anywhere else, and with our group, Boston Handmade Local, we make it easy to shop local at the event."
Jen Bennett Gubicza, of Zooguu Handmade Decor, based in Marblehead, MA, and also a returning vendor says:
We love hearing how much people loved their gifts from last year, who they’re shopping for this year, and why. It’s the personal story that makes handmade items so special. This year, we expanded our shop and invited two of our friends who make amazing gifts (SepiaLepus & Migration Goods) to join us at Boston Winter. It’s been wonderful to share that experience.
Boston Winter is free and is open 7 days a week, through New Years Eve (closed Christmas Day). Hours are Monday–Thursday, 11am–8pm, Friday and Sat, 11am–9pm, and Sundays, 11am-6pm. The event includes a Holiday Shopping Marketplace, and the shops from Boston Handmade Local are marked with signs to identify that they are local vendors.
